Bio

Michael Casselli studied at Antioch College (BA Visual Art/Performance Theory 1987) and at the Rhode Island School of Design (MFA Sculpture 1990). While his main body of work has always taken the form of large-scale mixed media installation, he has also worked extensively in the theater as a set designer, video designer and performer. His work, both in installation and in theater, has been seen extensively in New York and Europe, and he has had the pleasure to work with many of the artists who comprise the experimental theater scene in New York City. His work has included designing machines for choreographer Elizabeth Streb and Radiohole; sets for Reza Abdoh, Yehuda Duenyas, Louise Smith, Paul Lazar and Foundry Theater and has done extensive design work for the Faux-Real Theatre Company, and video for Donna Uchizono and Sin Troca. His installation works include: Appetite: The American Pastime (HereArts Center NYC); Prop (Art Exchange NYC ); Inside/Out (U of Minn. Minneapolis); Spectacle: The Modern Method (Machine Party, Amsterdam); Bunker 2 (Outfest, L.A.); Maintaining the Myth: Remix (CalArts Valencia, CA), Spark Harp (Manic Design Studios, Yellow Springs, Ohio), there but not there(The Armory, Dayton, Ohio), I Can Only Speak in Silence(Blue Sky Gallery, Dayton, Ohio) Slack Wire(Blue Sky Alternate Space, Dayton, Ohio. Michael  relocated to Yellow Springs, OH from New York four years ago, and has established Manic Design Studio, his central working space,  as a place of experimentation and hybrid works. Since moving to Yellow Springs, he has been active as a designer and educator with The Nonstop Institute of Yellow Springs, Ohio, a 501c3 dedicated to presenting workshops and cultural and educational programming at their multifunctional enclave within the Millworks Complex in Yellow Springs, Ohio, teaching Installation at the University of Dayton and Media Arts at Antioch College. He also loves to play drums and do side projects which can be seen at Other Stuff on his page.
